5 Free, Killer iTouch/iPhone Apps

Written by: Carsten Luth

From young to old, male or female, socially akward to rockstars, it seems like almost everyone has either an Apple iTouch or iPhone. Along with these phones comes the awesome app technology which Apple has seemingly perfected. Just browsing apps on the Apple iTunes store, you can find an app that allows you to do online banking with Bank of America, read the New York times, or even find 5,800 cocktail recepies….just in the top 100! The best part about all this? You can find almost anything you need for free! I picked out my favorite free apps from 5 different categories… see if your picks match up with mine.

1) GamingChili Pepper Blackjack

I know there are many of you that are going to be upset by this pick, but I honestly don’t think Padi Jump, Tap Tap, or Cube runner are the best game. In fact, there are so many games I decided to pick a company- Juju games (previously FatFree games). Juju makes excellent online, free, card game apps with food themes like Chili Pepper BlackJack or Cookie Solitare. They take normally fun card game and make them more fun by adding bonuses and online play. You can chat with your friends online as you play the card games and earn achievements by accomplishing certain things. The best part is that your player profile carries across accounts so other people can see the achievements you earn in other games, too!

Runner up: Lux Touch, it’s like Risk, but loads of fun and way less time consuming.

2) Music

This probably won’t come as a shock to those how have a very eclectic taste in music, but my obvious choice is the Pandora Radio app. Personally, I’ve used Pandora since it first came out on the computer and the app version is even more convient. Since 2000, they have had 50 music analysists that analyze thousands of songs comming out from thousands of artists and match them to your tastes- all for free. Legal, free music… how can anyone argue with that? Pandora asks for a band or style of music that you like and plays other bands with similar styles. Everything is affected by how you thumbs up or thumbs down certain songs and eventually you get a playlist specifically tailored to your personal tastes. You can then mix and match your different playlists to get a nice, personal radio station minus the ads and boring DJs.

Runner up: Music App: Music Quiz… this iPod was missing it so it’s good that someone came out with it. Pulls songs from your library and sees how quickly you can identify them. Now with 2 players!

3) Humor

Altough there are a plethora of apps out there dedicated to making you laugh, I’d say the prize has to go to Yo Mama by 100 Proof Software. There are some rediculous Yo Mama jokes that geniunely made me laugh. Although you may think that they are old or immature, it sure beats some of the other, more lame apps out there that attempt to be funny but really aren’t. The Yo Mama app nicely categorizes them for you so you can choose from “Yo Mama so (stupid/ugly/fat/poor/old)….”.

Runner Up: F-my life… this one is only for 17+, but it has some hillarious stories that people add themselves to the group.

4) Pointless

For every serious app on the iTunes store, there is at least one app that serves little or no pratical purpose other than just wasting time. My personal favorite out of all of these is Bubble Wrap by Orsome Software. It counts how many bubbles you can pop in 45 seconds and has a high score table. Sometimes you get a bubble that is worth 5 and sometimes the bubbles don’t re-inflate. Really it’s not even that complex, but it’s really addictive to try and beat other people’s scores.  The best part is that the company gives away $1000 in cash every week to the highest score. My high score is 170… can you beat that? It wona 2008 iPhone excellence award and was an Apple iTune’s favorite pick.

Runner up: Lightsaber… come on who doesn’t love waving their iTouch/iPhone around and looking like a giant nerd? There are a couple of colors and characters to choose from.

5) Practical

Reflecting again, it’s amazing the amount of apps out there. We’ve looked at the cool and the pointless, but the #1 app for practicality goes to the iHandy carpenter. Smartly using the advanced technology of the iTouch and iPhone, the iHandy app includes a leveler, a ruler, a protractor, a plumb bob, and a bubble level bar. Although this app is $2, you can get pieces of it (such as the leveler) for free. All of the parts are very beautiful and it’s obvious that the authors (iHandy Soft) put alot of effort into making it very user friendly.

Runner up: Flashlight by John Haney. This app lets you shine a bright light (5 different color selections) from your apple device. It has different strobe light modes, but absolutely kills your battery very quickly.
