A+ for Wii Motion Plus

The Wiimote

The Wii is the current and very popular console from Nintendo. People familiar with it will know that it is distinct in its innovative and intuitive controls. Some of its early critics have claimed that the system is too gimmicky and that it does not add to over all game play. Many of its fans, however, disagree and will argue that this new system revolutionizes how people interact with games.

The Novelty

Its first time users are usually mesmerized by its on screen action that is activated by your body and wrist motions. Sadly after a while this novelty seems to lose its luster after the user reaches the limitations that the Wiimote has. Even I found myself disappointed when I discovered that I could not be the swashbuckling sword wielding pirate or the Jedi in training from my day dreams. Well in some ways I could, but the original limitations of the Wiimote control system left those dreams unfulfilled due to its lack of sensitivity and perception of complex hand movements, such as those used in sword play.

The Answer

Solution! Wii Motion Plus. The new expansion peripheral for the Wiimote interface allows true 1:1 in game mimicking of the actual Wiimote in real time. This allows players and game developers to utilize a much more broad range of possibilities. Now games can be designed that allow for faster arm swings and movements. It was developed by Nintendo and AiLive using a new system to allow for the small sensors to pick up complex movements for a cheap price. After watching videos of it in testing and reading about I realized that it wouldn’t be that cool to have this nice device as it makes the Wiimote unable to use a nunchuck. I was also upset that your on screen character would have no way to move or use any of the nunchuck buttons. Thankfully the geniuses at AiLive were able to set it up as a pass through system which allows the Nunchuck and the Classic Controller to slip right in as if it weren’t even there. Imagine playing Zelda with the ability to move your sword or other weapons in real time. This can also be done with the nunchuck moving the character about. The Wii Motion Plus is going to be a great addition to the Wii’s diversity and will allow it to truly make the Wii a Nintendo Revolution.
