Karma : Fisker’s Plug-in Hybrid

Fisker Karma

The big picture

The Karma is not only sleek and beautiful, but it also contains top notch technology that allows its owner to charge it just like he would his iPod…by plugging it into a wall. This technology allows the Karma to run on electricity for a good 40-miles. This may not seem like a big deal, but this technology has just been opened, and as always, there’s a lot of room for improvement. For a great interactive gallery, go to the Fisker Automotive website.

Power

The Karma, surprisingly, has quite a bit of power under the hood.  With her 403 horsepower engine, she can accelerate from 0-60 mph in only 5.8 seconds in its “sport” mode. The car has multiple modes available, one being sport mode, and the other very advantageous one being “stealth” mode. The stealth mode permits the driver to rely exclusively on energy stored in battery. This battery is the corner stone to this new technology. A very similar one is used by Chevrolet in their upcoming Chevy Volt.

Misc. fun stuff

The Karma’s roof is lined with solar panels capable of powering small tasks such as powering the cooling system while parked in the sun, or running the radio without being turned on. Also, in addition to the usual GPS and LCD’s found in common luxury cars, the Karma has a neat little gauge indicating charge and gasoline in a very modern way.

The $87,000 Fisker Karma can be pre-ordered now from the Fisker website with a $5,000 dollar deposit on the purchase, and delivery scheduled in 2010. Although the car is pricey, one can be sure that some will take the leap into a greener life.
